Rudy’s Tenampa Taqueria: Midtown KC Veg Friendly Mexican

One of the mainstays over the years in my “Mexican restaurant rotation” has been Rudy’s Tenampa Taqueria on Westport Road. I’ve had dozens of lunches there, dinners and even birthday celebrations. I’m a big fan of their food, their service, the atmosphere and location. Their staff frequently gets recognition in the local media “Best Of” competitions for their outstanding service.

Rudy’s has long been a favorite lunch option for Dining Companion and me. We recently had lunch there. My friend decided to try something from the Lunch Special menu. The Chimiwowo is “one chicken chimichanga topped with cheese and served with rice and beans.” They really enjoyed it. I decided to try the Veggie Taco Salad for the first time (pictured here). It was a large taco bowl full of whole beans, lettuce, shredded cheeses, cucumbers and tomatoes. DH1 said that they like to get it for the cucumbers, but my bowl didn’t have any (they may have substituted a little guacamole).

One feature of Rudy’s that keeps me coming back frequently is their special vegetarian menu section, the “Create Your Own Veggie Plate”, which has been available on the menu for years. They have six main options to choose from, ranging from chile relleno to bean tostada to veggie fajitas. You can pick two for one price or opt for three for another price. The platter comes with sides. A great deal for vegetarians or anybody wanting to eat healthy or just fans of these options.

Rudy’s chips are thin and crispy, some of the best in Kansas City.

The restaurant has a variety of seating options and can accommodate larger parties. Even when the restaurant is busy, the noise level is acceptable. You can easily have a conversation with your dining companion(s).
