We are now in the hot weeks of a Kansas City summer, but people are out enjoying KC restaurants. I’ve been sampling and visiting so many that I’m behind on updates to Chuck Eats KC. Feels like more restaurants are opening now than ones that are closing. Here is my July round-up of restaurant news.
- 1981 K-Chicken is a new Korean chicken concept opening soon in Overland Park at 10412 Mastin.
- Taquiza Tacos & Tequila opened in May at 7308 W 119th St. in Overland Park.
- Sushi Kodawari is a new sushi restaurant in the Crossroads District that describes itself as a “8-seat omakase sushi counter inspired by the edomae style of old Tokyo.” Reservations are required.
- Haha’s Kebab’s and Schwarma (204 W 39th St, KCMO) experienced a fire on July 8th.
- Penrose Espresso Bar and Pastry Counter is a new coffee and dessert counter in the Crossroads District.
- Unforked has finally re-opened in Overland Park, after a year of rebuilding because of a fire in 2022. It’s drive-thru is the only part open right now, but the dining room will eventually re-open. (7337 W 119th St, Overland Park, Kansas). Their menu can be described as an elevated burger and tacos concept. I like their fries and the multiple vegetarian options.
- Lion’s Choice, which specializes in roast beef sandwiches, has closed both of their locations in Johnson County.
- Chilakillers has opened and closed in the Lenexa Public Market. The Mexican concept was only opened two months.
- The Prospect KC is partnering with the Kansas City Public Library to re-open the coffee shop inside of the Central Library.
- Palacio Maya Mexican Restaurant has opened a new location in the former IHOP at 5201 NW 64th Street.
- The opening of the Rock Island Bridge entertainment and restaurant district has been pushed back until Spring 2025. The project plans to convert an old railroad bridge across the Kansas River into a unique entertainment and dining experience.
- Ponak’s Mexican Kitchen is reportedly up for sale. They’ve been a Southwest Boulevard destination since 1975. We love their guacamole and guac -centered dishes.
- Kon Tiki Room + Conchita Tacos is opening a new location at 1922 Baltimore Ave in the Crossroads District.
- Bonsai Bowl is a new fast casual bowl and wrap concept at 8932 W 95th St. in Overland Park.
- Buenos Aires Restaurante – Bakery is opening in August in downtown Shawnee (10919 Johnson Drive). Their food is also available at the new World Fresh Market in Overland Park.
General Mills has announced a limited edition cereal featuring brothers Travis and Jason Kelce. Travis Kelce is preparing for another season with the Superbowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. Jason Kelce recently retired from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Kelce Mix Cereal combines the brothers’ three favorite cereals: Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms, and Reese’s Puffs. We eagerly await a review from Travis’ girlfriend, Taylor Swift.
