June 2024 got off to a rainy start and is ending with sweltering heat and…more rain! This month has seen lots of openings and closings in the Kansas City food scene, but there have been big announcements about Westport and the Country Club Plaza.

  • Aixois is opening a new location in Park Place in Leawood.
  • Gilhoulys Bar on 39th street in KCMO is closing after 29 years. They report that the landlord refused to renew their lease.
  • Strawberry Hill Baking Company, famous for its fabulous baked povitica, is facing eviction in 2025 from its location in Merriam, Kansas. It has less than a year to find a new location.
  • Thelma’s Kitchen and Reconciliation Services are re-opening at 31st and Troost, after two years of renovations to their building.
  • Odyssey Coffee plans a Fall 2024 opening at 5247 W 95th Street in Overland Park. This will open in the strip mall across the street from Meadowbrook Village.
  • I just found out that Clock Tower Bakery & Cafe in downtown Overland Park closed last December. The owners made a decision to retire.
  • Westport has seen many ups and downs over the past two centuries. Recently, the district saw the arrival of more chain restaurants and the closing of some long running bars. A new upswing in the bar scene is in the works. The Westport Bars KC Group has announced their plans to open seven new bars and venues over the next year. Also opening soon in the district, Q Kansas City, an LGBTQ+ nightclub (504 Westport Rd). This will be next door to Kelly’s Westport Inn.
  • Shinju Sushi and Hibachi in Prairie Village has closed.
  • Q39 has announced plans to build another location in Lee’s Summit.
  • The Country Club Plaza should have a new owner by the end of this week. Our Plaza wish list includes more locally owned restaurants and stores. Please give us something uniquely Kansas City and less Anywhere, USA.
  • Hooters is closing their location on Barry Road. This location had been open 20 years. The chain is reducing the number of its locations.
  • Betty Rae’s Ice Cream is opening its fifth location, in Meadowbrook Village (5330 West 95th Street, Prairie Village). The Youth Review Crew and I are big fans of their ice cream.
  • Chuy’s on the Country Club Plaza closed earlier in June.
