Kansas City may best be known for its thriving and influential barbecue, but the metro area is also home to an amazing variety of cuisine. It’s a great place if you are a vegetarian, vegan or healthy eater, not just because of the restaurant options, but because Kansas City is in the middle of so many locally grown foods. Kansas City also has many farmer’s markets, which should be covered in a future guide.

I’m not creating a special section for vegetarian-only restaurants, mostly because there are so few of them, but also because there are many more restaurants with substantial vegetarian and vegan options. They should get some recognition for their commitment to making healthy menu options available.
Cannot guarantee that every restaurant on this list is totally meat-free on menu options that may look vegetarian. As always, ask your server (or the owners) for more info. We will update this list based on feedback and more research.
Abol Ethiopian Restaurant (formerly Elsa’s)
Ethiopian cuisine is always vegan friendly and Abol’s is a vegan destination in Overland Park. All the great vegan dishes like shiro watt (chickpeas), misir watt (red lentils), gomen (collard greens) and Kik Alicha (yellow split peas). They also offer the Ethiopian take on veggie pasta.

BIBIBOP Asian Grill
Bibibop is a new fast casual Asian fusion restaurant in Waldo and other area locations. Korean style customized bowls with vegan and gluten free options. Creating your bowl starts with your base. Options include salad, rice (purple or white), or Japchae noodles (sautéed sweet potato glass noodles). You can mix several bases. Then you can add a hot topping like black beans, potatoes or bean sprouts. Next are your cold toppings, mostly vegetables (the heart of most bibimbap bowls). Options include red cabbage, carrots, corn, daikon, sesame kale, cucumbers, kimchi, eggs and cheese.
There are a bunch of delicious sauce/dressing options: gochujang, teriyaki, sesame ginger, cucumber wasabi, and more.
Finally, you can choose proteins like organic tofu.

Blue Koi is a world famous and popular Chinese noodle and dumpling restaurant with two locations in the Kansas City area. If I’m ever thinking about a farm-to-table restaurant for my birthday dinner or a date, The Farmhouse in the City Market area usually makes my short list. Seasonal, fresh ingredients which are right up the alley of any whole foods, plant-based eater. For brunch on weekends, they offer a Veggie Benedict, Vegan Hash, or Seasonal French Toast. For dinner, you could start with a Roasted Turnip & Beet salad, warm up with some Fried Mushrooms, and savor the Vegan Pumpkin Risotto. Planet Sub
The original inspiration for this local chain were the Yellow Sub restaurants in Lawrence. Fed me through college and was a reliable option when I became a vegetarian in 1989. The Planet Sub chain has lots of vegetarian and vegan sandwiches, including some based on the original chain. One of my favorites has long been the “off menu” Tempeh Reuben.
