Kansas City Restaurant Openings, Closings, and News – May 2025

  • The City of Kansas City, Missouri has announced the 12 restaurants that will receive grants to improve their outdoor dining areas: Outdoor Dining Enhancement Grantees Announced
  • You Say Tomato is bringing back its popular breakfast and lunch service, starting in June. They also plan to continue doing pizza nights (one of my favorite food events).
  • Housewife in downtown Grandview, Missouri has been on the top of my foodie bucket list for years. The owner has announced that she is selling the restaurant and moving to Arizona to pursue new opportunities.
  • Seasons 52 has closed on the Country Club Plaza. The closing was rather abrupt, according to employees. The long running store has been a fixture on the south side of the Country Club Plaza. It was part of the Darden Restaurants restaurant chain (Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Eddie V’s Prime Seafood, and The Capital Grille). There are 44 Seasons 52 locations around the U.S.
  • Krab Kingz KCK is closing their Kansas City, Kansas location. Their location on Broadway in KCMO will remain open.
  • La Fetta will be a new Italian deli opening this fall at 143rd and Metcalf in Overland Park.
  • HomeGrown Merriam has opened in Grand Station at 8807 Shawnee Mission Parkway.
  • Tiffany Bakery is opening this week in Westport at 4111 Pennsylvania Ave. They will offer traditional desserts like cakes, macarons, danishes, and croissants. They also will offer Vietnamese banh may sandwiches.
  • Le Donuts & Coffee is a new doughnut shop at 8017 State Line Rd. in KCMO.
  • Chingu KC is closing its location in Westport in late May. Chef Kim cites personal reasons and industry issues, but promises to make his food available via pop-ups and other events.
  • 1888 Coffee is opening in the former Mother Earth coffee spot in Hyde Park (KCMO).
  • Geo’s Cafe is a new coffee shop in south KCMO specializing in Brazilian pastries. (3523 E. Red Bridge Rd.)
  • Danny Edward’s BBQ is closing at the end of May. The owner of the property is not renewing the lease and plans to allow the dispensary next door to expand.
  • We were the first to report that Tiki Taco was opening a new store in Olathe. It is now open in the Olathe Pointe shopping center at 119th and Black Bob Road (14947 W 119th St, Olathe, KS 66062).
  • The New York Butcher Shoppe Kansas City has opened at 4928 Main Street (South Plaza) in Kansas City, Missouri.
  • South of Summit Taqueria & Tequila is closing. The concept was located next to the Summit Grill in Waldo.
  • Playa Bowls is opening soon in Prairie Village, at 6927 Tomahawk.
  • 1587 Prime, a steakhouse concept by Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, is opening soon inside the Loew’s Hotel .
  • Abelardo’s, a regional Mexican chain, opened a location last year on 85th Street in Waldo (KCMO), Next to the old Dairy Queen building. The chain has opened another location in Grandview and plans location in Independence and Excelsior Springs. The Nebraska-based chain has around 57 locations.
  • Chris Jones will be the new chef at Waldo Thai.
  • We reported last month that Paul’s Jr. Drive-in was re-opening under new ownership. The popular drive-in is now open at 1008 S. Osage Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas.
