It’s always a pleasure to re-discover a coffee shop that you’ve stopped visiting for reasons. Sometimes you move to another part of town where there is another coffee shop that is convenient. Factors like the pandemic disrupt routines like working in a coffee shop as a remote worker (I’ve been a freelancer for nearly 25 years). Some shops change owners and other move.
This year, I’ve been visiting Homer’s Coffee House in downtown Overland Park often this year, mainly because my family has been meeting up here. I had been to this location several times prior to 2024, but I was a regular location at their former location at Red Bridge Shopping Center (now Crow’s Coffee).
Back in the 2010s, I made weekly or bi-weekly trips to their Red Bridge location. The coffee was great. The baristas and staff were friendly. I was never made to feel unwelcome. I talked to the staff at the current location about Red Bridge. They share that the coffee shop did pretty well there, but then the Red Bridge complex had some “off” years. In the 50 years I’ve been patronizing establishments (and the library) at Red Bridge, I’ve seen many of those ups and downs.
Homer’s current location in downtown Overland Park is just the perfect indie coffee shop for a growing urban neighborhood. The place is always busy. They host live music on weekends. It’s in the middle of tons of pedestrian traffic going to the farmer’s market and other businesses. There are more and more apartments nearby, so the shop is in the heart of a very walk-able neighborhood.
I really like their coffee. I’ve had their mochas several times, as that is my go-to coffee house choice. It was smooth and very good. They have pastries and other menu options. On one of our visits, a family member got a slice of quiche (see below).
They have sidewalk seating.
