August is traditionally a time of year when Americans go on vacations, take time off, and get the kids ready for the school year. Restaurant owners often go on vacation and sometimes even close down for a week or two.If it feels like there is less Kansas City restaurant news this month, that may just be normal.
- Andre’s Chocolates closed its tea room this month.
- Bamboo Penny’s is opening a new location in Prairie Village called Penny’s in the Village.
- The Prospect KC has closed their location at 2000 Vine in KCMO. “You can still get your favorite coffee drinks, pastries, sandwiches, and salads at our retail coffee bar/learning lab at The Nook, inside the Central Library, or order through our catering services.”
- Hereford House has closed its location in Leawood due to financial issues following alleged food contamination by a former employee.
- As a big fan of women’s sports, I’m eagerly anticipating the opening of The Dub, a women’s sports bar opening in the former Banksia space (105 W. 9th St.) in downtown Kansas City. Monica Brady and Rachel Glenn are opening the concept later in 2024.
- Mr. Wingz, a chicken joint in KCMO, is opening a second location in Overland Park at 9532 Antioch Road.
- Soiree, a Jazz District restaurant featuring Southern cuisine, has just closed. The owners have cited financial reasons.
- Taco Naco KC has opened a new location at 7715 State Line.
- TAKo TAKo Sonoran Style is a new concept at 8025 State Line.
- Dos Tequilas KC will be a new Mexican restaurant and sports bar opening in Shawnee.
- Emiliano’s, a Mexican restaurant, has opened in Olathe at 2137 E 151st Street.
- Unforked in Overland Park (7337 W 119th St.) is now fully open.
- Common Tiger is a new speakeasy themed bar at 5616 Johnson Drive in Mission, Kansas. Opened by the owner of The Primrose, which is a nearby cocktail bar.
- Super San Antonio is a new grocery store at 800 Kansas Ave in Kansas City, Kansas.
