March was another roaring month for restaurants in the Kansas City area, with many openings and announcements. Prominent celebrities announce a new steak house. Favorites change owners and another closes for a big re-model.
- The big announcement this month is that Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are opening a steakhouse next year called 1587 Prime. The 10,000 square foot, two story restaurant will be inside the Loews Kansas City Hotel. This is a newish hotel located two blocks east of the downtown convention center. The name is a nod to the players’ uniform numbers.
- The former Thriftway grocery space on Main Street in Westport is now Midtown Market, a grocery store focusing on Asian foods.
- One of my father’s favorite restaurants and the Kansas City institution recognized by the New York Times last year, Kitty’s Cafe (810 1/2 E. 31st Street) is closing temporarily for a big re-model. Bigger building, bigger kitchen, and more seating are in the plans.
- Green Dirt On Oak is opening any day now in the Crossroads District.
- KC India Mart is planning to build a larger store at 135th Street and U.S. 69 in Overland Park. The new store will take two years to build and open.
- Vivilore in Independence has a new owner. Jollene Hastings has bought the restaurant from Whit Ross and Cindy Foster, who had run the antique store and fine dining concert since 2012. I’ve reviewed the restaurant in several pieces.
- In North Kansas City, Clean Eatz is opening soon at 5357 N Antioch Rd. They are offering a cafe with smoothies, burgers, melts, grab-and-go, and meal plans.
- Caldwell’s Burgers is opening soon in the City Market. The concept is named after Guy Caldwell, the founder of Guy’s Snack Foods.
- Meshuggah Bagels’ new location in Liberty is open. Look for the new location of my favorite KC area bagel shop at 8600 NE 85th St.
- Mexico Lindo KC opened this week at 1046 W. 103rd St. This in the former Cacao Restaurant and Applebee’s space in Watt’s Mill Plaza, on the north side of 103rd Street.
- Osteria Bianchi is a new Italian concept in north Kansas City, Missouri. They feature hand-crafted pasta, pizza, antipasti and more.
- Fareway Meat & Grocery is opening a fourth location in Basehor, Kansas.
- Betty Rae’s Ice Cream is opening a fourth location, in Merriam, Kansas. Johnson Drive and Antioch Rd.
- The Kansas City Current have added Messenger Coffee as one of their local vendors at the new CPKC Stadium
- T’ähä Mexican Kitchen is opening soon on the west side of the Country Club Plaza in the former Jax Fish House space.
